Red Wine D.O. Ribera del Duero Chafandin 75 cl

Located in Pequera del Duero is the El Quiñón Estate. Bodegas del Jaro is owned and managed by the Osborne-Osborne family and was to created to produce ‘plot’ wines - wines created from the very specific aspects of individual plots within an area. The top ‘plot’ wine is Chafandin, produced in an area of vines by the same name. The results of the companies efforts were rewarded when Chafandin 2003 won the coveted Red Wine of the Year in 2006 at the International Wine Challenge.

The Finca El Quiñones is located on the right bank of the Douro River. It is surrounded by vineyards slightly less than one kilometre from the vineyards of Vega Sicilia. The area is 108 hectares, of which 65 are planted with Tempranillo 60 hectares, 2.5 ha. of Merlot and 2.5 ha. of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is located on a hillside with a southerly aspect, with a difference in altitude ranging from 800 meters to 745 meters. With several hillsides and in different directions, it is complex and difficult to work. Soils were created by the passage of the river river Duero thousands of years ago. In the Finca there are two distinct soil s and they occur in varying depths, mainly due to the slopes and terraces. In the lower lying areas, the soils consist of boulders, gravel, limestone, quartzite, limestone, silt, clay, sand and gypsum. All these components are in different percentages. The higher levels consist of a layer of hard white loam and also sporadic levels of limestone and gypsum all accompanied by silt, clay and sand. This is a different depth, from 20-25 centimeters of soil up to 1 meter deep. Between the two levels or even below them, there are groundwater flows that run from the surrounding mountains. The single vineyard ‘Chafandin’ has an average vine age of 35 years. It has a wide range of soils, both superficially and at depth, with abundant alluvial stones. The colour of the surface is dark ochre or orange ochre. Soils are deep, well-drained, with clay components varying from 15% and may reach 30%. The levels of organic matter and nutrients are low.

A fabulous partner with the top cuts of beef, very good roast lamb, venison or pheasant. Will also pair well with fine, medium to strong cheeses or pâté.

Abv: 14%
Grape Variety: Tinto Fino (Tinto Fino is a locally acclimatised type of Tempranillo)
Tasting Note: Densely coloured with a dark ruby appearance. This wine delivers an array of captivating aromas of dark fruits, earthy cocoa, fresh coffee, juicy plums and mineral notes. The palate is ample, rich, fleshy and concentrated with integrated spicy notes.
