The man who would eventually give his initials to the House is also the man to whom we owe its iconic cuvée. As a winemaker, Georges Hermann Mumm was driven by a single motto: "only the best". In 1875, in tribute to the wine on which the reputation of the House is founded, he decided to ornament the bottle with a red silk ribbon, a symbol of the highest of French honours, the Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint Louis then the Grand Cordon de la Légion d'Honneur.

As the Champagne des Souverains, so great was the fame of the Cordon Rouge wine that it became the symbol of the House and of champagne as a whole.

The wine lovers of today continue to worship G.H.MUMM Cordon Rouge and have made the cuvée France's premier and one of the world's favourite champagnes.

The elaboration
Didier Mariotti and his team of wine experts are responsible for perpetuating, year after year, the House signature. This demands long experience and a certain degree of talent! They have no less than 77 grape varieties to choose from, each unique. The grapes come from vines possess a 94% rating on the Échelle des Crus. The distinctiveness of the G.H.MUMM vineyard is reflected in the final blend: a predominance of Pinot Noir, a strong presence of Chardonnay and a touch of Pinot Meunier. To complete the union and ensure stylistic consistency, the Cellar Master adds a minimum of 20% reserve wines. After several years ageing, the light balanced dosage of G.H.MUMM expresses the identity of the cuvée, embodying both the character of the Champagne terroir and the talent of the winemaker.

In keeping with the history of Cordon Rouge, the sabrage – a traditional ceremonial borrowed from Napoleon’s armies, never fails to make a great impression, notably on special occasions.

At the Tables of Great Chefs
"Only the best." Georges Hermann Mumm's motto could certainly also be that of the greatest chefs of today and yesterday. This shared mindset goes a long way to explaining the strength of the bond uniting G.H.MUMM's champagnes and haute cuisine.
It is a relationship that has been nurtured over the years, as evidenced by the bottles produced by G.H.MUMM in the nineteenth century, personalised for leading restaurants and hotels. Even at that time, the House of G. H.MUMM's champagnes were regularly mentioned in publications featuring the views of leading arbiters of taste, which included the menus of receptions attended by society's crème de la crème. The brand also maintained excellent relationships with the period's prominent professional gourmet associations.
Mindful of the importance of this heritage, since 2009 G.H.MUMM have organised "Menus de Légende", an annual gastronomic event without equal, associating champagne and haute cuisine. For the 2011 edition, several Michelin-starred chefs, including Jean-Pierre Vigato, Paul Bocuse and Michel Sarran, were invited to reinterpret the menus of four of their illustrious predecessors: François Vatel, Antonin Carême, Auguste Escoffier and Fernand Point. Each chef thus gave the creations of these gastronomic geniuses a second lease on life, in full harmony with G.H.MUMM's champagnes.
